A Big Guy Took My Ball!

Willems, M. (2013). A big guy took my ball. New York: Hyperion Books for Children.

Pig has lost his ball, and claims a big guy has taken it. He behaves as a child. He goes running to elephant for help, and he is crying and wants comfort. Elephant behaves like the adult. He takes up for pig, and claims injustice. He retreats when he discovers the one with he ball is whale and much larger than him. Whale claims he is misunderstood. An argument is posed. Who has more fun, the big guy or the little guy? They come to a resolution to create their own game to include fun for everyone. The characters portray real social interactions and assumptions people make. It illustrates the message to not judge book by its cover, and promotes peaceful resolutions and embracing differences. Despite the adolescent appearance and style, the theme and characters create credibility to everyday social interactions.
