Landy, D. (2007). Skulduggery pleasant. New York: HarperCollins.
Stephanie Edgley has inherited her uncle's fortune. While staying the night in her newly acquired mansion, her life is threatened. Skulduggery Pleasant comes to her rescue, and he introduces her to a world of magic that had caused her uncle's death. Stephanie never quite fit in the "normal" world and worms her way into Skulduggery's as the detective's sidekick. Landy's magical world exists parallel to the ordinary human existence, and yet it is told in a logical and plausible sequence. Through the development of Skulduggery and Stephanie's caring relationship, the discovery of her strength and triumph over evil, an investment in the characters and their future is made. Stephanie's immaturity and innocence create believability in her character. The world of magical skeletons, goblins, vampires and spells recruits the reader in and invites them to come and play.
