This Is Not My Hat

Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Somerville, Massachusetts: Candlewick Press.

A small fish steals a hat from a large fish that he believes is asleep. The small fish thinks he will get away with this act, but he doesn’t realize the events that unfold that ultimately lead to his demise. Making a right choice even when you think no one is looking is a theme children can connect with and gain insight from. Also, the style in which it was written can be used to promote higher-order thinking in making predictions as well as inferring. The text is simple and clear, but the use of large illustrations covering most of the page allows for the reader to infer the character’s emotions. Likewise, in the end the solution is not stated but rather inferred.
