Fault in our Stars

Green, J. (2012). The fault in our stars [Kindle version]. Retrieved from Amazon.com

Teenager Hazel is terminally ill. She has cancer. She has and continues to undergo every possible treatment to prolong her life as long as possible. Hazel has not been able to lead a normal life for a teenager due her illness and spends much of her time alone. She is obsessed with the book An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten, which she draws strength from in coming to terms with life and death. Her mother thinks she is depressed and requires her to attend a weekly support group with other teenagers either living with or having survived cancer. She attends these meetings to appease her mother, but Hazel views the group meetings as being a complete waste of time. This changes when she meets Isaac and his friend Augustus Waters. Hazel and Augustus have an instantaneous spark. As their relationship grows, they understand and support one another in ways no one else can. Augustus uses his Make-A-Wish Foundation request to take Hazel on a trip to meet Peter Van Houten, but this signifies that Augustus’ cancer has returned. Even though Augustus’ life ended soon after, the time they did share together was what most hope for. Although this New York Times bestselling book deals with a heavyhearted illness, it is also filled with love, strength and witty humor. The reader is left with an inspiration to live everyday like its your last.
