Out of the
Scorpio Sea emerge the capall uisce.
The majestic and dangerous water horses make their appearance every year from
October-November. The largest event on Thisby Island is the Scorpio Races. Men
catch these water horses for the races, but it is a dangerous game. Capall uisce are not to be trusted due
to their thirst for blood. Sean Kendrick has won 4 out of the 6 races that have
been held on Corr, and it is thought he is the fastest capall uisce on the island. Kate Connolly, Puck, is the first female
to have entered the races, and she decides to ride her horse Dove instead of a capall uisce. Sean and Puck are both
riding for high stakes. Sean has to win in order to keep his best friend Corr,
and Puck has to win in order to keep her family’s house. They have raised the
stakes even higher by falling for each other and experiencing love for the
first time. No one wants a woman riding in the races, so Sean did everything in
his power to keep Puck safe. This sacrifice cost Sean the race and Corr to be
injured, but with the winnings Puck saved her family home and bought Sean and
Corr’s freedom. Through Sean and Puck’s alternating narratives, Thisby Island
seems so realistic and tangible. This Michael L. Printz Award winning book
takes the reader to an intriguing fantasy world and on an exciting adventure
with the Scorpio Races and their magical water horses.
