Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Kinney, J. (2007). Diary of a wimpy kid. New York: Amulet Books.

Kinney writes this first-person narrative through the eyes of Greg. Greg is sharing the intimate details of his life, thoughts and feelings by writing in his journal. The unique style and combination of reading the character's journal and viewing his comic drawings that reveal his feelings create a bond between the reader and the character. Greg is an intelligent kid of average popularity in the middle school world, and his experiences are current with with what kids grow up with in today's world. Greg wants to stand out but not in a way that would deem him to be a "geek". Popularity is important, and in middle school sometimes more important than friendship. With a setting and characters that today's kids relate with and an entertaining style in which it is written, it is a current favorite.
