Ness, P. (2008). The knife
of never letting go. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Candlewick Press.
Todd Hewitt grew up in a
dystopian society in the New World. He was raised in the all male community of
Prentisstown. He was the last boy only days away from his 14th
birthday before he was to become a man. Everyone had been infected with the
Noise germ causing a constant stream of thoughts to be heard by everyone.
Through the Noise Todd knows his town leaders are anticipating his birthday and
his transformation to a man. His adoptive parents Ben and Cillian warn Todd of
the impending dangers of his birthday and send him on the run. Due to the crash
of her spaceship, Todd encounters the first female he has ever seen Viola Eade.
In order to survive, they must learn to trust each other and keep hope alive.
Together Viola and Todd discover truth. The rest of the world knows the men of
Prentisstown unjustifiably blamed the Spackle and then subsequently the women
for their failing society and killed them. They are considered outcasts and
criminals. Todd and Viola form an unbreakable bond and flee for safety. Mayor
Printiss and his army are on their tail taking over all of the settlements in
their path. Barely surviving their journey, they make it to the settlement of
Haven where they can get help, but realize it’s too late. Mayor Prentiss is now
President Prentiss. With dynamic characters, an imaginative society and
thrilling action and adventure readers will be left wanting more. To find out
what happens next, read the sequels to Chaos Walking.
