Babymouse: Dragonslayer

Holm, J.L. & Holm, M. (2009). Babymouse: dragonslayer. New York: Random House.

In this graphic comic style book, you meet Babymouse. She is a lover of books and adventure. While at school, Babymouse finds herself in a predicament. She is failing math and is required to join the mathlete team. She feels helpless and inadequate, but she does as she is told. Her thoughts during team practice continually drift to a medieval land threatened by a dragon. She is continuously pulled between her present struggles and her imaginary struggle. During the math competition she conquers her battles and brings her team to victory. Babymouse's imaginary world represents her fear of being unsuccessful in school. Children can identify with her character by relating their own weaknesses through hers. She also uses her strength of reading to help her with her shortcomings. This teaches that difficult tasks can be conquered. Visually inviting and a lot of fun, Babymouse adds adventure to everyday life.
