Draper, S. M. (2010). Out of my mind. New York: Antheneum Books For Young Readers.
Melody's intellectual ability is higher than the norm, but who would know? She has cerebral palsy and is unable to communicate what is going on in her mind. She is treated as if her brain functions in the same manner as her body by doctors, teachers and peers. Her next door neighbor Violet truly sees her and equips Melody with the power to communicate. Melody is such a multi-dimensional character, and she causes one to think about assumptions made about others and the effect it may have had. The journey Melody brings the reader on through her tribulations and accomplishments could be a child out there today. The story makes the reader wonder, "Could this be based on a real person?" Out of My Mind is a touching story that has the power to change the way a person view and interactions with someone with disabilities.
