Lenhart, A. (2013, November 7). 9 Things You Need To Know About Teens,

Technology & Online Privacy. [Slideshare Presentation]. Retrieved from: http://www.pewinternet.org/2013/11/07/9-things-you-need-to-know-about-teens-technology-online-privacy/

Lenhart shares the statistical data illustrating the continued increase of mobile Internet use by tweens and teens over the last few years. This comes as no surprise. As a classroom teacher of 3rd graders, I have had many students who owned their own smartphones or iPads. So, the increased use does not just apply to those between the ages of 12-17. Now granted, what these mobile devices are being used for depends upon the age of the youth. Many students between the ages of 12-17 are active in social media in some form. This creates the opportunity for privacy issues to arise such as information being accessed and used by 3rd parties, private information gathered with the intent of criminal activity or publicly sharing an indiscretion giving a false self representation. What I didn’t realize is that teens are actively aware and concerned about these privacy issues. The research shows many have reflected on past Tweets or Facebook posts and have had regrets. I think that is just part of being human. A number of teens are also asking advice on how to utilize privacy settings. I think as an educator having a conversation with students and showing them the data will only empower more youth to be informed, aware and increasingly careful when using the Internet and mobile devices.

Here is an infographic compiling Lenhart's findings:

  1. Hi Amy,
I really like your blog. I think it is very important for tweens and teens to learn how to set their Facebook setting set to private. They need to know how to protect themselves.
